Marshmallow Activity

The Marshmallow Challenge is a remarkably fun and instructive design exercise that encourages teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity.

The task is simple: in eighteen minutes, teams must build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.

Use your cameras, recorders, or note paper to document the following:
  • Interactions between team members
    1. Who are the doers?
    2. Who has suggestion?
    3. What suggestions worked?
    4. Were there collaborative moments?
    5. Were there consultative moments?
  • Innovative ideas
    1.  What were they?
    2. Which ones worked?
    3. Was there support for these ideas?
  • Processes
    1. Where were processes outlined for success?
    2. What were the processes outlined, if any?
    3. Did the processes help or hinder the success?
